Connection is why we’re here; it is what gives purpose and meaning to our lives.

Social Media Addiction Therapy

When treating overuse and addiction concerns, I help people manage their cravings, increase their impulse control, and improve their relationships. Some of the hallmarks of behavioral or process addictions include increased tolerance, craving, withdrawal symptoms, and continued use despite negative consequences. Depending on what is right for your recovery, I facilitate either a harm reduction or abstinence approach. When possible, it is helpful to include family members, partners, or close friends in treatment in order to provide additional accountability and change the relationship patterns that perpetuate addictive behaviors.

Some of the leading social media platforms include Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, Discord, Reddit, etc. Research has shown that two hours or more a day on social media has been linked to a significant increase in anxiety and depressive symptoms. The original intent for social media to help us feel more connected has left many of its users feeling polarized and isolated. Social media creates an environment with endless social comparison which in turn leaves most people feeling more dissatisfied with their lives. When spending excessive time on social media, people often report feeling like they are missing out, insecure about their appearance or lifestyle, or more at odds with their loved ones. In recent years, social media has also been particularly damaging due to the worsening of the political divide and extreme polarization.
